Kirby’s 30th Anniversary Post

Today 30 years years ago, April 27th, 1992, we were first introduced to Kirby with Kirby’s Dream Land on the Game Boy. Since then, we’ve gotten various games throughout the series, all the way to the most recent game Kirby and the Forgotten Land just last month. So yeah, the Kirby series turns 30 today, which is a pretty big anniversary, especially since Kirby didn’t start out great.

Kirby’s Dream Land on the Game Boy was an interesting game, but not too creative. This was mainly because there were none of the fancy copy abilities. All you could do was suck up enemies and suck them back out. It was also very short, which makes sense since of both the game itself having some expanded movement and the Game Boy standards. However, the game was successful selling over 5 million copies, making it the current best-selling Kirby title.

However, on March 23rd, 1993, Nintendo released another Kirby game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game was of course Kirby’s Adventure, which introduced copy abilities. This was a very creative feature as players could suck up enemies and absorb their powers. This was a fun game mechanic, and the addition of color made the game stand out with its unique hub worlds and level design.

Then, on March 21st, 1995, Nintendo released the second Game Boy Kirby title called Kirby’s Dream Land 2, which was longer than the predecessor, and even included eight copy abilities. There were also animal friends, which also gained Kirby some new techniques. The game was successful selling 2.36 million copies.

The Kirby series still goes on today with games still coming out in the fun platforming series of games. Kirby and the Forgotten Land released one month ago, and expanded the series even farther by making it 3D. I don’t remember when I first played Kirby’s Adventure, but it definitely was recent since it was a time when I wanted to try new game series instead of just Mario. So I played Kirby’s Adventure and loved it very much, and it’s still my favorite NES game. Since I didn’t record my reaction of the 9.23.21 Nintendo Direct, I can’t tell you if I was excited or not for Forgotten Land. I definitely was surprised, and also looking forward to the game talked about at the 2.9.22 Direct, but I can’t recall any earlier. But even though I’ve only played a couple of Kirby games, they are still some of the most fun viddeo games I’ve ever played, and can’t wait to play more.
